Peter is an internationally known expert in positive youth development and provides thought and project leadership for Search Institute’s major research projects, writes peer-reviewed and practice publications, and provides strategic advice for Search Institute leadership. Peter has led or been a senior researcher on most of Search Institute’s major U.S. and international research studies since joining Search Institute as a Senior Fellow in 1995. He has created or helped develop the Institute’s major surveys on Developmental Assets, Developmental Relationships, spiritual development, adolescent thriving and sparks, positive school climate, social capital, and service-learning. Peter holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology (cum laude), as well as a Master’s and Ph.D. in child development and family relations all from Syracuse University. His areas of expertise include child and adolescent development, and the development of healthY families, schools and communities. Peter is certified by the U.S. Professional Tennis Association as a tennis teaching pro, is a regular mental game columnist for Racquet Sports Industry magazine, and works directly with youth as a long-time high school tennis coach. He has a special focus on the preparation of youth sports coaches to promote positive youth development through sports. His nearly 50-year career has focused on research and advocacy to assist all children to thrive and contribute positively to the success of their families, schools and communities.
