Co-construct a Rubric with the Fishbone
Engage the whole class in co-constructing a rubric for evaluating student work.
Students work with the teacher to determine the aspects of an assignment that should be evaluated, how to weigh the aspects relative to one another, and how to distinguish excellent work from satisfactory work and both from unsatisfactory work. The fishbone tool, which arranges specific components under larger categories, can be used to scaffold the discussion. When students have a say in what will be evaluated, they will not only understand expectations better but also be more invested in meeting them.
