Communities of Practice Implementation Guide
The Communities of Practice Implementation Guide is designed to set a standard for leadership development programs that help youth-serving professionals build stronger relationships with young people—supporting their growth in character strengths like generosity, respect, humility, purpose, and curiosity.
The guide offers practical resources to help organizations design Communities of Practice that foster strong relationships and collective learning, including:
- Planning a Community of Practice: strategies for design and launch
- Facilitating a Community of Practice: guidance on inclusive member recruitment, session design, logistics, communication, and sample applications
- Evaluating a Community of Practice: methods for assessing progress and outcomes
- Identifying a Community of Practice’s Funding Needs: guidance on sustainability and resource development
By centering supportive connections and the principles of Developmental Relationships, the guide equips organizations with strategies to collaborate across sectors, align efforts, and more effectively respond to the needs of young people in their communities.

The Communities of Practice Implementation Guide is the result of a three-year collaborative study of San Antonio-based UP Partnership’s Excel Academy, a multi-year leadership development program for youth-serving professionals. The goal of this guide is to provide a model for other communities across the United States. The study was completed in partnership with Search Institute and was supported by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation.
