Homework Journal and Debrief
Learn about how students view homework through free writings and a debriefing discussion.
Using a traditional notebook or an online notebook, students journal about their experiences with homework over a set period of time. This assignment solicits feedback from students in real-time, allowing them to share more about what’s happening while they complete their homework, how they’re feeling, how motivated they are while completing the homework assignment, and what they see as the purpose or point of the homework assigned. When compared to teacher expectations, student accounts can lead to surprises, spark important conversations,
and spur changes in homework practices. This activity can sometimes reveal a disconnect between teacher intentions and student experiences.
