Thriving Through Developmental Relationships
A Training-of-Trainers and Certification Program
Thriving Through Developmental Relationships (TTDR) is a multi-year partnership to support and create relational capacity across youth ecosystems. This three-year learning experience is designed for youth-serving organizations that have already embraced Developmental Relationships and have a shared commitment to positive youth development.
Through the partnership organizations will:
Catalyze effective use of Developmental Relationships across the organization
Build capacity and align staff with common language and relationship-building practices to become a relationship-rich organization
Access to support to more effectively achieve their goals of promoting thriving in the lives of young people
This is a training-of-trainers and certification program implemented on a cohort basis, which means your organization will identify a group of at least a dozen of staff members that will became trainers and engage in a continuous learning experience over multiple years.
Missouri is a big state, and we need a lot of passionate people out there spreading the message. That’s why we’re focused on building sustainable capacity across the state, and Thriving Through Developmental Relationships (TTDR) is exactly what we needed. It gives us the flexibility to keep the momentum going and helps us expand the reach of developmental relationships into every corner of Missouri.

Key Program Elements
TTDR Introduction: An engaging, one-hour online, self-directed learning experience titled, Developmental Relationships: The Roots of Youth Thriving, which introduces Search Institute’s approach to developmental relationships and provides opportunity for self-reflection to prepare participants for the experience.
TTDR Cohort Kick-Off: A shared virtual experience introduces a “relational spirit” to the program, outlines the basics of what to expect for the in-person experience, discusses logistics and expectations, and provides opportunity for personal storytelling about our shared mission for helping all young people thrive.
TTDR Training-of-Trainers: a 2-day in-person event where participants will experience two workshops on developmental relationships, which they will be prepared to lead following the event.
During these two days, participants will also learn additional training and communication strategies for effective facilitation of the workshops and develop plans to contextualize and deliver the learning experiences within their organization.
TTDR Community of Practice: Trainers become part of a multi-organization virtual Community of Practice for their ongoing development, sharing lived experiences, learning from peers and accessing additional content they can use to continue strengthening the relational skills and mindsets across their organization.

What Participants Valued the Most
-
- I understood and remembered the elements and terms of the framework. I think I'm able to explain it a lot more. During the training I was able to really ask all the small questions and weed out the confusions.
- Going through the workshop content and discussing the best way to deliver within our organization and community.
- Doing the activities ourselves so that we can train on them.
-
- The materials are top notch and turn-key. The facilitators were really instructive, created space for questions and clarifications, and infused storytelling and research insights with a balance that improved my experience as a learner.
- How to build a web of relationships and how all staff in a program can work to build on a teens success.
- The resources and working through each of the activities we would be leading helped prepare me to better lead those activities.
-
- The activities that allow us to self-reflect and learn from others in community, and identify where we currently practice the elements with staff peers and youth.
- The space for digesting the materials. The candor and openness of Search Institute facilitator. The resources to take with us and digital resources to follow.
- It allowed me to really hit home about the importance of Developmental Relationships, not only at the youth facing level, but as a leader as well. It is import information for anyone who sees or interacts with youth at any point in their job.
